My Jello Canadians! Heh heh.


Happy Canada Day, all!

Today, Canada turns 143, but it doesn't look a day over 75! Unless you live in downtown Winnipeg, in which case just smile politely and feign surprise (I kid! I kid! Love you, Winnipeg!).

I didn't become a Canadian citizen until I was nearly 17, and it happened right at the end of June, so my mom's friends threw us a little barbecue where I was introduced for the first time to the popular North American phenomenon, the Jello Jiggler. And so, while all of you out there are busy associating Canada Day with things like beavers and maple trees and counting down the days until hockey starts again, may I be so bold as to add another important Canadian symbol to your repertoire: J-E-L-L-O!!

Today marks 20 years of me celebrating Canada Day as a Canadian citizen. Naturally, I wanted to do something special to mark the occasion.

Behold! My homage to the nation I love, and the dessert that reminds me I'm home:


I love living in a country where I have the freedom (to slightly paraphrase the Charter) to make any old petroleum-based dessert I please. This one is made of strawberry jello and a tub of Cool Whip. In my defense, the strawberries in the middle there came directly out of our garden, and I'm making homemade strawberry ice cream to go with it. Patriotism has never boasted so many empty calories!

This July 1st, may your barbecue be delicious and your beer plentiful. Happy Canada Day, kids!

I love dessert photos. So much better than dessert tables when one is attempting to not EAT the desserts Ahhhhh!

So, when I took my first trip away from my kids I put outfits for my three kids in big zip lock baggies with clean underware AND socks. Yes, they were labeled with what baggie went with what day. I mean DUH, you don't want them in their stained shorts on the day they see my MIL, but on the day at my mom's house stained clothes are AOK.

Good for you for taking a surreality trip! You should do it every year!

This Post Brought To You In 1-Minute Increments

Still alive out here in the middle of nowhere! I've had some time-management issues this month that have made blogging and commenting near-impossible. The Captain has been away and Rosemary's Baby's tutor had to take a 3-week sick leave. Living where we do, there's no one to take over when our tutor gets sick. The major lesson I've learned from this is that MY KID NEEDS HIS THERAPY! Holy cow, he's been a little terror! I literally cannot spend more than one minute at a time on the computer or I go back upstairs to find the little monkey either raiding the cupboards and fridge of things he shouldn't have, or in the garage, trying desperately to figure out how to back the car out of the driveway for a joyride. He's suddenly napping at weird hours and appearing in my room expecting breakfast at 3AM. No-therapy-RB is killing me! However, all should return to normal next week and I am to be banished to the basement, as my presence on the main floor duri

Obama in Ottawa

Last night, we fought some crazy traffic and squeezed into the tiniest seats I've ever seen for a chance to hear Barack Obama speak. As you can see, we weren't wealthy enough to afford the good seats up front. Luckily, we had an excellent view of the Jumbotron! Let it never be said that Major Dad and I have the skills to take a good selfie... Those seats were seriously so tiny, the only thing that stopped me from getting up taking a walk to ease my back pain was the knowledge that the drop was so steep, jumping up might cause me to topple right off the balcony and be tackled by Obama's Secret Service detail. This is assuming I survived the fall. I truly don't know how Senators fans do it. It was a fun (and incredibly expensive) evening. Obama is a smart and interesting man.
